how to notice
Start by learning to recognize what interests you
Most people have been taught that what they notice doesn’t matter,
so they never learn how to notice
Not even what interest them.
Or they assume that the world has been completely pre-noticed,
By everyone else, by people with real authority.
Verlyn Klinkenbourg’s book Several short sentences about writing shares many common viewpoints with the Feldenkrais Method. The main overlap, though is that both value noticing as an essential skill. The former as a requirement for writing well, and the latter for moving well.
Why is noticing important for moving well?
When you tune into the sensations and qualities of what you’re doing instead of just following instructions, you catch things as soon as they feel off and you can make adjustments. You’re able to sense what is safe for you and what isn’t. You know when you’re approaching your limits and you stop before you reach them, thus avoiding injury. And you’re able to reproduce the results you get in class on your own time, thereby building your sense of agency.
Fortunately, learning how to notice can be developed and honed like any other skill.
The Sept-Oct series of classes starts just after Labor Day. These are powerful lessons and I look forward to sharing them with you!
Warm regards,
Rebecca
