What forms of sensitivity matter?
The question above was posed by photographer and novelist Teju Cole in a lush conversation about Anne Carson’s short story 1=1. You can hear Cole reading the story here.
When I step out of daily doing to lie down on the floor and move with attention, what emerges? A calmer nervous system, thinking that is both sharper and more expansive, finely-tuned sensitivity. I experience Awareness Through Movement (ATM) as a creative act. Like Carson’s 1=1, memory, image, emotion, and sensation surface and interact in unpredictable and complex combinations. Work like Carson’s and practices like ATM help me to feel more connected and receptive to the world. I share them with the same hope for you.
Why do I bring up art so often in a somatic class newsletter? And why do my classes have titles like Untie, Untangle rather than the more direct and common approach like Easy Hip Joints? Because I am a Somatic Practitioner and an artist, I construct my classes and newsletters with your imagination and your joints in mind. Our time together is an invitation to bring the the parts of yourself that modern life often separates into one integrated whole.
